Autumn half term is the best kept season of the year here. The water is still warm enough to swim in, the terraces are empty enough to sit down without booking, and the interior is finally cool enough to walk in. There are just a few things worth knowing in advance.

When is autumn half term, exactly?

That depends entirely on where you are coming from, and in 2026 the countries diverge more than usual.

The Netherlands, 2026 (ministry advisory dates):

  • Region North: 10 to 18 October
  • Region Middle: 17 to 25 October
  • Region South: 17 to 25 October

Note the word advisory. Schools may deviate with the approval of their participation council, so the school guide is what counts, not this article.

Belgium, 2026:

  • Flanders: 2 to 8 November
  • Wallonia and Brussels: 19 October to 1 November

The Flemish difference catches many people out. All Saints falls on a Sunday in 2026, which pushes the Flemish autumn break a week into November. Travel sites still quoting 26 October to 1 November have not taken that in.

In 2027 it lines up again: all of Belgium is off from 1 to 7 November. The Netherlands then sits at 16 to 24 October for North and Middle, and 23 to 31 October for South.

For British readers: English and Welsh half term usually falls in the week of 26 October, which puts it squarely in the second peak described below.

Spanish schools have no autumn break

This is the first thing you notice if you live here or have children at a Spanish school: there is no autumn half term.

The 2026-2027 school year in the Comunitat Valenciana started on 9 September 2026 and runs to 18 June 2027, with 179 teaching days. The only breaks in between are Christmas (22 December to 6 January) and Easter (25 March to 5 April). Nothing in October or November.

What does exist is a four day puente in October 2026. 9 October is the Dia de la Comunitat Valenciana and falls on a Friday; 12 October is the Fiesta Nacional and falls on a Monday. The weekend sits in between. Friday to Monday off, for schools and offices alike.

That is not trivia but planning data, because it decides when this coast is busy.

When it is busy and when it is not

Lay the three calendars over each other and you see exactly when to come and when not to.

9 to 12 October: the busiest. The Spanish puente coincides with the first days of the Dutch North region break. Spaniards from Madrid and Valencia drive to the coast. Hotels fill, the seafront restaurants have queues and the AP-7 jams on Sunday evening. Book early for those days.

13 to 16 October: the quietest stretch of the whole month. The puente is over and the Dutch Middle and South regions have not started. These are the days when you get a table by the water on a Tuesday afternoon without calling.

17 to 25 October: the second peak. Dutch Middle and South plus the Walloon and Brussels schools pile up here. This is the classic half term week on this coast and the prices show it.

26 October to 1 November: tailing off, with a sting. The Walloon holiday runs to 1 November, and 31 October and 1 November are busy days here in any case.

2 to 8 November: the Flemish week. Quiet compared with October and often the best value of the autumn. The weather is a shade less reliable by then.

The weather: what to actually expect

October here is no longer a summer month, and not an autumn month in the north-west European sense either. It is something in between, and the figures put it more precisely than a brochure.

Air. The average high in Benidorm in October is around 25 degrees, the average low around 15 degrees. That ten degree gap between afternoon and night is the point: by day it is a summer day, after sunset it is not.

Rain. And then the side that rarely makes the brochure: October is statistically the wettest month of the year, averaging about 55 millimetres. It does not fall here as drizzle but as a downpour. It can be dry for three weeks and then deliver the entire monthly norm in one afternoon. That is called a gota fría, and it is why underground car parks and dry riverbeds deserve respect in this period.

In practice: expect mostly sunny days and allow for one or two wet ones. Plan the interior, the museums and the shopping as a buffer, not as a fixed programme.

Can you still swim?

Yes, and that is not a polite answer.

The sea temperature in Benidorm averages 22.8 degrees in October, with extremes of 18.8 and 25.6. For Alicante the average is 22.7. For comparison: the North Sea rarely passes 19 in August.

The sea here in October is warmer than the air at night, and that is exactly the sensation that surprises people. You step in at four in the afternoon and it feels soft; you get out and you want a towel, because the wind is cooler than in August.

What does change: the beach services wind down. Lifeguards, sunbed hire and beach bars do not run everywhere in October, and when they stop differs by town. The big beaches at Benidorm and Alicante stay staffed longest, the small calas of the Marina Alta the shortest. So swim on a busy beach rather than alone.

By November the water cools towards 20 degrees. Swimming is still possible; staying in a long time is less pleasant.

The interior is at its best in October

A pool at the Fonts de l’Algar. Crowded in August, largely yours in October

This is the real argument for autumn half term. In July and August, walking in the hinterland here is irresponsibly hot. In October it is exactly right.

Guadalest is the classic: a village of a few hundred people on a rock, with a castle and a belfry standing above the reservoir. It is popular, so go early or go late. From the coast at Benidorm it is just under an hour.

The Fonts de l’Algar near Callosa d’en Sarrià are waterfalls with pools you can swim in during summer. In October the water is cold, but that is not the point: you come for the walk along the water without the summer crowd. Check the opening hours in advance, because they shorten in low season.

The Elche palm grove is on the World Heritage list and counts more than a hundred thousand palms. It is a city park the size of a forest, it is free, and in October it is pleasant rather than scorching.

The Montgó between Dénia and Jávea and the Serra Gelada at Benidorm are the best known walking areas on the coast itself. Take more water than you think you need; October sun feels mild but is not at full midday.

What is open and what closes

The Elche palm grove. More than a hundred thousand palms, free, and bearable in October

This is what half term visitors run into most often.

Terra Mítica in Benidorm runs its Halloween season from 3 October to 1 November 2026. After that the season closes. Anyone arriving in the Flemish half term is just too late for this park.

The water parks run on a summer season and are generally shut in October. Do not count on them.

The zoos and smaller attractions usually stay open on a winter timetable, so shorter hours and fewer shows. Check the site the day before, not a review site.

Restaurants in the small coastal towns take their annual closure in October and November. That mainly applies to Moraira, Calp outside the centre and the smaller calas. In Benidorm, Alicante and Torrevieja you barely notice it.

The weekly markets run all year and are actually nicer in October, because you can walk through them.

1 November: watch this one detail

If your holiday runs into November, this is the point to remember.

1 November is Tots Sants, All Saints, and an official public holiday. In 2026 it falls on a Sunday, and in the Comunitat Valenciana a public holiday falling on a Sunday is not moved to the Monday. So Monday 2 November is an ordinary working day: shops open, schools open, offices open.

On 1 November itself many shops are closed and buses run a Sunday service. The cemeteries, by contrast, are busy: this is the day families clean the grave and put flowers on it. It is one of the few moments when a visitor sees something of life here that has nothing to do with tourism.

And the evening before, 31 October, is Halloween. Young here but now substantial, with town programmes and a whole season in the theme parks.

Benidorm also has local holidays on 9 and 10 November 2026. Anyone there that week will find the town celebrating and the council offices shut.

With children, practically

The day starts later. The beach only fills after ten in October and the sun is low by six. A daily rhythm that works in August does not work here: start later and eat earlier.

Pack long trousers and a jumper. This is the most common packing mistake. Twenty-five degrees by day means fifteen at night, and on a terrace by the sea that feels colder.

Water shoes are more useful here than in summer. After the first autumn downpours more washes up on the pebble beaches.

Have indoor options ready. The MARQ in Alicante, the chocolate museum in Villajoyosa, the Canelobre caves near Busot: all things that work better in the rain than a beach.

Do not assume Alicante is the airport. Valencia is an hour and a half from the northern Costa Blanca and often has different autumn prices. Sometimes that saves more than the extra driving costs.
