Benitatxell cuts its IBI rate to 0.75 per cent
The council of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell voted on Monday to cut the rate of the municipal property tax from 0.80 to 0.75 per cent.
It is the fourth cut since 2019, and the reason lies a few years back: a cadastral revision that took thirty years to arrive.
Seven in favour, three abstentions
The decision came at the council meeting of Monday 2 November 2026. Seven councillors from Més Benitatxell voted in favour, the three from RED Benitatxell abstained and the PP councillor was absent.
Why the rate keeps coming down
In 2024 the Gerencia Territorial del Catastro de Alicante updated the ponencia general de valores catastrales for this municipality. The previous one dated from 1994.
A catch-up of that size sends cadastral values sharply up. The council undertook to lower the rate in stages to absorb it. Mayor Marcos Zaragoza describes an approach de forma progresiva aimed at una sostenibilidad económica.
A lower rate is not a lower bill
That is the caveat the local press adds itself, and it matters to anyone who receives a bill.
Your bill is your cadastral value times the rate. If your value rose more in that same revision than the rate has fallen, you still pay more. Compare your own bill from last year, not the percentage in the press release.
How that sum works is set out in our guide to the IBI tax and why it differs by municipality.
At the same meeting: 420,000 euros for resurfacing
In the same session the council raised investment in asphalting and street repairs to 420,000 euros.
What owners in other municipalities can take from this
Benitatxell is not an exception but an example. For urban property the law lets municipalities set a rate between 0.4 and 1.10 per cent, and almost every one of them sits somewhere in between.
To find out where yours stands, look in your own town hall’s ordenanza fiscal and in the notice published in the Boletín Oficial de la Provincia de Alicante. Ask about the year of the last ponencia while you are at it; that figure often tells you more than the rate.
From which tax year the 0.75 per cent applies in Benitatxell has not been announced.
